Our TOP 10 in Tennessee – y’all come take a look!
Tennessee is one of our favorite states in the USA! There is so much to see and so many adventures to have. Come join our family and see what made our top 10 list in the Volunteer State! Take this journey with those you love, and you’ll make a lifetime of memories!
Tennessee became the 16th state of the Union in 1796. It was the first territory admitted as a state under the federal Constitution. Before statehood, it was known as the Territory South of the River Ohio. The name Tennessee is derived from the name of a Cherokee village, Tanasi. Tennessee first became known as “The Volunteer State” during the War of 1812 due to its prominent role of sending 1,500 volunteer soldiers.
Here’s OUR top 10 MUST SEE things in Tennessee:
1. Opryland Hotel
When I asked my children what their number one tourist destination in the entire state of Tennessee was, all four of them said, “The Opryland Hotel!” Wow, I didn’t expect that! And that’s not because I don’t think that it’s fabulous or completely impressive – it most definitely is! I was shocked because there are so many great options to choose from, and for that to be #1 for all four of my children speaks volumes!
Gaylord, the parent company of Opryland, has among the most impressive hotels in the world. We are lucky to have one here in our home city of Nashville! It is an absolute MUST SEE when coming to Music City.
There are three large atriums within the hotel. Within one of these atriums, there is a guided boat tour and a dancing water show. At Christmas time, the Opryland Hotel is completely magical! I could literally write an entire blog post on this hotel alone (and I just might), but trust me, you MUST see Opryland!
2. Dollywood
Dolly Parton is an absolute ICON! Everything she touches seems to turn to gold, including her theme park in her hometown of Pigeon Forge, TN. Parton opened the doors to Dollywood in 1986 and has built one of the most beloved theme parks as well as one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country. Three million visitors descend upon the Great Smoky Mountains National Park every year. Don’t miss this fabulous taste of Appalachian culture and good ol’ southern fun! Oh, and you MUST try the Cinnamon Bread – it’s famous all around these parts!
3. Ryman Auditorium
Known as the Mother Church of Country Music, the beautiful and historic Ryman Auditorium is as iconic as country music itself. In May of 1885, a riverboat captain named Thomas Ryman went to a tent revival just three blocks from where the Ryman Auditorium stands today. After hearing the words of charismatic evangelist Sam Jones, Ryman encountered a life altering experience. From that point forward, Ryman faithfully sought God instead of money and the things of this world. In 1892, the Union Gospel Tabernacle was completed. On December 25, 1904, at the funeral of Captain Thomas Green Ryman, Reverend Sam Jones took a vote to rename the Tabernacle to Ryman Auditorium. The audience responded with a standing ovation.
The Ryman was declared a national historic landmark in 2001. Today, you can see artists of all genres. Due to the acoustics in the auditorium, most performers declare that this is one of the greatest venues in all of the world!
4. Grand Ole Opry
The Grand Ole Opry is the show that made country music famous! It began in 1925 as the WSM Barn Dance in the National Life & Accident Insurance Companies 5th floor location in downtown Nashville, TN. On June 5, 1943, due to such great demand, the Grand Ole Opry was moved to the Ryman Auditorium. Thirty-one years later, in 1974, a brand new venue was built across the Cumberland River called the Grand Ole Opry House. A six-foot circle of wood from the Ryman sits centerstage as a reminder of the show’s legacy. I actually worked at the Grand Ole Opry House as a photographer. Standing on that old circle is an incredible feeling. Thoughts rush in as you consider those that have stood in that very spot. Surprising performers include Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, James Brown, and many US Presidents.
5. Rock City
Growing up, I always wanted to visit Rock City, thanks to the bright red barns with the black roof signs that said, “See Rock City”! Of course, I had no idea what Rock City was, or even why I needed to go, but thanks to the power of brilliant marketing, by golly, I wanted to go!
Years later, when I finally made it, I was NOT disappointed! This place is magical y’all! Located atop Lookout Mountain, just 6 miles from downtown Chattanooga, Rock City is a true marvel of nature featuring massive ancient rock formations, gardens with over 400 native plant species, and breathtaking “See 7 States” panoramic views. Take an unforgettable journey along the Enchanted Trail where each step reveals natural beauty and wonders along the woodland path.
6. Cades Cove
A beautiful verdant valley looping through the Great Smoky Mountains, Cades Cove offers some of the best views in all of the east coast. There are ample opportunities to see spectacular wildlife, including bears, white tailed deer, coyote, ground hogs, turkeys and racoons. Driving the Cades Cove Loop Road, an 11-mile, one-way loop that circles the cove, will give motorists the chance to see all that the cove has to offer. Give yourself plenty of time (at least three hours) – you’ll want to pull off many times on your 11-mile journey.
7. Tennessee Chattanooga Aquarium
I would consider the Tennessee Aquarium one of the best I’ve seen so far, and for good reason – it’s one of the Top 10 aquariums in the country according to Trip Advisor.
Tracing the path of water from the mountains to the sea, the Tennessee Aquarium allows you to come face-to-face with animals native to the Southeast, as well as amazing creatures that live all over the planet. The mission of the Tennessee Aquarium is “to connect people with nature and empower them to make informed decisions about water and wildlife.”
Also, Chattanooga is a fabulous little town. There is so much to see and do. It will take another post to list all of the fabulous eateries, shops, and tourist destinations. The Hot Chocolatier literally needs it’s very own post!! Here are a few pics:
8. Cheekwood Estate & Gardens
A 55-acre botanical garden and estate located in Nashville, TN, Cheekwood is a beautiful display of art, exhibits, and stunning landscapes. The spectacular garden pathways make you feel like you’re in another world. Tours of the historic Cheek estate are available and give an excellent depiction of how life was in 1929, when Leslie and Mabel Cheek lived there with their two children, Leslie, Jr. and Huldah.
Over 225,000 people visit Cheekwood every year, making it one of Nashville’s top cultural attractions. During spring, you can see over 150,000 blooming bulbs, and at Christmastime, there are miles of holiday lights. Add this one to your list any time of the year!
9. Hiking – Waterfalls
Anywhere there is a hiking trail, and a waterfall, you will find my family. Thankfully, there are lots of these in Tennessee. There are so very many, and each of them deserve their own mention (a topic for a later blogpost). For now, here are our very favorites:
Fall Creek Falls – 2009 Village Camp Road, Spencer, TN 38585
Burgess Falls – 4000 Burgess Falls Road, Sparta, TN 38583
Cummins Falls – 390 Cummins Falls Lane, Cookeville, TN 38501
Cane Creek Cascades – 2009 Village Camp Rd, Pikeville, TN 37367
Ozone Falls – U.S. Highway 70, Crab Orchard, TN
10. Graceland
What would a visit to Tennessee be without a stop at Graceland, the home of the one and only King of Rock’n’Roll, Elvis Presley?
When you step inside the Graceland Mansion, you will see exactly where Elvis lived, relaxed, and spent time with his family. You’ll see his music room, bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room, pool room, and the famous Jungle Room. You will also get to see the rest of his 14-acre estate, including the Meditation Gardens, where Elvis has been laid to rest. No trip to Tennessee is complete without a trip to this iconic landmark!
Tennessee is a true gem!
There is so much to see and do when visiting the Volunteer State. Although, known for its great music, there are also so many great sites and attractions to see in Tennessee. Come on down y’all, and explore our great museums, restaurants, aquariums, and one of my all time favorite national parks – The Great Smoky Mountains!!

Oh the darn COVID19 – my girls trip for 2021 is supposed to be to Nashville and Memphis – plus would love to check out a lot of these great Tennessee ideas!
Oh Angela, I’m so sorry! Nashville is definitely a top spot for a girls getaway! Hopefully you’ll be coming soon. It’s a great state with SO MUCH to see and do!
Tennessee is in my family’s list next for family vacation! Thanks for sharing all these great spots to visit!
So great Adrienne! You won’t be disappointed! If you come in the next month or two, HYDRATE! It’s pretty hot right now with our humidity. But if you love the waterfalls, like we do, there are so many that you can “swim” under!! And so many other options include AirCon!
We went to TN once, but need to return and add these spots to our list. Thanks!
Jessica, there’s so much to see all across the state. Come on back, whenever you are able!
Now I can’t wait to make it to Tennessee! So many awesome things to see and do.
I agree Stephanie! There is SO MUCH to see all across the state! Thanks for stopping by!
We recently did a family trip to Tennessee and it was fabulous! I never knew there were so many great things there to see (we’re not from around there.). The BBQ in Memphis was fabulous, too! I wish we could have stayed longer. Now you make me want to go back!
Thank you Amanda! We LOVE all of Tennessee! Come on back when you get the chance!
Tennessee is such a beautiful state! We went to an amazing drive through zoo there!
Santana, I should look that up. I know of a fabulous one in Virginia, but I’ll have to do some research!! Can’t wait to find it. Thanks so much!
What a great state to explore!
Barbara, I agree!! Thanks for stopping by.
Cade’s Cove and those waterfalls are spectacular!! I haven’t visited much of the States (I’m in Canada) but I’m continually surprised by how much beauty there is!
Thank you Sarah! Cade’s Cove is one of our very favorites. I neglected to say that these top 10 are not in any particular order! And I agree, Tennessee is a beautiful state. I’m looking forward to visiting your gorgeous Canada too!
I’ve driven through Tennessee a lot, but I haven’t done much touring there. There are a lot of places I want to visit in that region though.
Eva, when you are able, come on down – it’s so very beautiful and such diversification!
I have family in Tennessee but haven’t quite made it for a visit yet. This information is very helpful and should I make it there, I will revisit!
I think you’d love it Judean!!
There is so much to see and do in Tennessee. We spent a week there and only saw one on the list.
Cindy, I completely agree! Come on back when you get the chance – it’s a beautiful state for sure!!
I love Tennessee and can’t wait to return. So far I have only been to Nashville and would love to explore more areas. Thanks for the tips. We often talk about leaving Connecticut and going to Tennessee!
Jill, thanks for stopping by. While Nashville is fantastic (and our home), there are indeed lots more places to explore and things to do in the beautiful state of Tennessee! Connecticut is gorgeous too (much cooler in the summer)!!!
I love Tennessee! I’m hoping to go to Dollywood soon! I saw it on a Hallmark movie and it looks amazing! The people in Tennessee are always so nice and inviting!
Holly, I’d love to see what Hallmark movie was promoting Dollywood – that’s awesome!! And thank you for the kind words about the people of TN – we’re a pretty friendly state! 😁
We love aquariums, and this one definitely looks like it would be amazing!
It’s a great one for sure, Danielle! There’s another great one in Gatlinburg too!
I’ve never been to Tennessee but would love to go! I’d be down to check out all these places
I don’t think you’d be disappointed Alexis! 😁
Your suggestions are wonderful. I would add, for serious music lovers, the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville. My daughter is a self-taught guitarist, and I can play a smidge of piano, but whatever —It was a really neat museum for kids and adults alike!
Maggie, thank you for the tip! We’ll check it out for sure! Such a blessing to have a talented musician in your family! 🎸
We lived in TN for nearly 3 years and did get the chance to explore some of these items: Graceland, the Opryland (loved their fountain show), and Cheekwood. We took a few days for the Smokey Mountains, as well, although unfortunately we visited during one of the government shutdowns. You could still drive through the park and hike at your own risk, but the visitor’s centers were closed. I would really love to go back.
Kristin, definitely make it a priority – the Smokey Mountains are extraordinary. We’re also planning a trip out west and wondering how the shutdowns will affect our ability to see everything!!
I promised my 20-year-old daughter a trip to Tennessee when she turned 21. Of course, Nashville is front and center, but there is so much more to see and do! I hope we will be able to do it, as she turns 21 in March. I would LOVE to stay at the Opryland hotel!
Ramae, what a wonderful 21st Birthday adventure!! She will absolutely LOVE it! And even if you don’t stay at the Opryland Hotel, you’ll be able to go through the entire thing. They do have a brand new waterpark though that would be INCREDIBLE!!
Half of my family lives in Tennessee, so I loved this post! I’ve done about half of these things, so now want to check off the other half. My favorites are Cade’s Cove and Gaylord Opryland.
Jordan, ME TOO!! Those two are TOPS in our book!
So many great places on this list. We’ve stayed at the Opryland Hotel, but haven’t visited any of the others. I’ll have to add these to our list of places to visit.
Staying at the Opryland Hotel is an adventure all by itself – so very much to see and do!
Great list! I love going to Tennessee. I look forward to exploring some of these.
Thank you for stopping by Tricia.
We’ve been planning to move to Tennessee for some time. We were planning a trip this fall until the whole virus pandemic. I’m pinning this so I can reference back to it once we can replan our trip!
Thanks so much Amy! And Tennessee is a great place to live!!
I love this list!! I need to get out and travel down there. One of these days, and now I’ll have a better idea about sites to see.
Thanks so much Annette! And there’s so much more than our Top 10!
I knew when I visited Tennessee, I’d need to check out Graceland. But Cade’s Cove is absolutely breathtaking! I’d never heard of it before. And Opryland Hotel looks fabulous inside!
Chelsea, Cades Cove is literally at the tippy top of our list – you feel like you’re in another world.
Tennessee is one of my favorite states to visit and I have been there many times. I love the Opryland hotel, Ryman Auditorium, and Dollywood! So much fun! On my last trip I was going to go to Graceland, but looked at the price and decided to visit Pink’s Palace for the day. I will have to try Cades Cave on my next trip, it looks neat. Thanks for all of the ideas.
Jennifer, you’ve already seen so many great places. I’d say that Cades Cove is a must see on your next TN adventure!!
Tennessee is definitely on our bucket list. Thanks for letting us know the places we should see and for the photos to wet our appetite until we get there.
